Why is burning the main problem?

Tobacco burns at the temperature of 600°- 900°C and releases smoke. Tobacco smoke consists of more than 6000 chemicals, out of which 100 are considered to be harmful or potentially harmful. Among these substances are Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Tar.

IQOS heats tobacco up to the temperature of 350°C, instead of burning it. As a result, IQOS produces aerosol, which consists of significantly lower level of harmful chemicals*.

Traditional Cigarettes produce TAR

Tar refers to the weight of the residue from cigarette smoke when a cigarette is burnt, minus water and nicotine.

IQOS does not produce TAR[1], as the device uses heating technology, which means that the device heats tobacco instead of burning it

It is noteworthy that nicotine is not the primary cause of smoking related diseases. Nicotine is addictive, but it is the other chemicals emitted when a cigarette burns which are the main cause of smoking-related diseases. Among them are Tar & CO.

Cigarettes produce TAR. The residue left from the smoke of 5 cigarettes. IQOS does not produce TAR. The residue left from 5 heat sticks.

IQOS contains 95% less levels of harmful chemicals[2]

IQOS does not burn tobacco, but heats it. As a result, IQOS releases aerosol, which contains 95% lower levels of harmful chemicals. 

Important information: That does not mean reduction of risk by 95%. IQOS is not risk free, it provides nicotine, which is addictive. Only for use by adults.

IQOS produces on average 98% less Carbon Monoxide compared to cigarettes

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless toxic gas.  It is produced in large amounts when some things burn, like fuels, wood, or tobacco in cigarettes.

When CO is inhaled, it enters the bloodstream through the lungs, and reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to the body, affecting the brain, heart and muscles.

IQOS doesn’t burn tobacco, but heats it, producing on average 98% less carbon monoxide and significantly lower levels of other harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes[3]. 

Important information: This does not mean a 98% reduction in risk, and carbon monoxide is only one of many harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke. IQOS is not risk free, and provides nicotine which is addictive. Only for use by adults.

Cigarettes release high levels of Carbon Monoxide. IQOS does not.

IQOS is backed by science

Did you know that IQOS is the first and so far the only tobacco heating system to receive modified risk product authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)?

The US FDA has concluded that a full transition to IQOS significantly reduces human exposure to harmful and potentially harmful substances[4].
